The island is extraordinary — Garajonay is a UNESCO World Heritage site holding the best-preserved laurel forest anywhere, Roque de Agando is the plug of a volcano that has eroded away around it, and Silbo Gomero, the whistled language demonstrated over lunch, is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. And the price covers the fast ferry both ways, the coach, the guide and a sit-down lunch, which is more logistics than most people want to assemble themselves. The one thing you must not forget is on the bring list rather than in the highlights: a passport or ID card. The ferry will not board you without it.

Is there enough time in San Sebastián?
By common consent, no. It comes at the end of a long day and guests regularly say they wanted longer there. If the capital is your reason for going, this is the wrong booking.
