Places to visit in Tenerife for free

The national park has no gate and no ticket. Neither does Masca, Anaga, the laurel forest, the lava pools, the basilica at Candelaria or any viewpoint on the island. On a site that earns a commission from tours, that is worth saying first: the great majority of what you came to see costs nothing to look at.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Four things take money, everything else takes petrol

The cable car at €42 return, the summit permit above it at €15 for non-residents, the guided descent of the Masca gorge from €40.66, and the commercial attractions in the north. That is the list. The permit is the one worth reading twice: the €15 applies to slots between 09:00 and 17:00, and outside those hours it costs nothing. The bus to Punta de Teno is €1 because private cars are barred; car parks in the national park are free and unticketed. Everything else on this page is open ground.

THE PERMIT CHANGED IN JANUARY

Until 19 January 2026 the Telesforo Bravo permit to the crater was free for everyone, and most of the internet still says so. It now costs €15 for non-residents and €6 for residents of the other Canary Islands, for slots between 09:00 and 17:00. Book an earlier or later slot and it is still free — which is the one piece of arithmetic on this page worth doing.

SIX THINGS ABOUT THE FREE SIGHTS

Before you set off without a ticket

01
The park is free, the lift is not
FIXNothing charges you to drive the TF-21, stop at Roques de García or walk the caldera floor. The €42 cable car is the only ticket up there, and it is not included in any tour on this site.
02
The permit is the one people get wrong
FIXAbove the top station the last 160 metres to the crater need a booked, timed permit. Since January 2026 it is €15 for non-residents in the 09:00–17:00 window and free outside it — and in summer the slots go weeks ahead either way.
03
Punta de Teno is free to reach but not by car
FIXPrivate vehicles are barred from the TF-445 every day. The bus from Buenavista is €1 each way and runs inside a seasonal window.
04
Free parking fills by mid-morning
FIXThe car parks on the TF-21 and at the coastal hamlets in Anaga are free, unticketed and finite. Early is the whole strategy.
05
Free swimming has no lifeguard
FIXThe natural pools and the north-coast beaches are open Atlantic. Spain recorded 472 drownings in 2025 and the Canaries had 75 of them, the second-highest of any region.
06
The commission does not change the advice
FIXWe earn when you book a tour, and most of this page tells you not to. Where the free version is better, that is what it says.
QUESTIONS

Free Tenerife, asked and answered

Is the Teide National Park free?

Yes. There is no entrance fee, no gate and no booking to drive the TF-21 through it or to walk the caldera floor. The car parks at the main stops are free as well. The cable car is separate, at €42 return for an adult.

What can you see in Tenerife for free?

Almost everything: the national park and the whole volcano road, Masca village, the Anaga laurel forest, La Laguna, the lava pools at Garachico, the basilica at Candelaria, every mirador on the island and all the beaches.

Do I need to pay to climb Teide?

For the final 160 metres to the crater, yes, if you go during the day: the Telesforo Bravo permit has cost €15 for non-residents since 19 January 2026, for slots between 09:00 and 17:00. Outside that window the same permit is free. Either way it is booked ahead through Tenerife ON, and the €42 cable car is separate.

What costs money in Tenerife?

For sightseeing: the cable car at €42 return, the summit permit at €15 in the daytime window, the guided Masca gorge descent from €40.66, and the commercial attractions. Boats, guided tours and hire cars are choices rather than entry fees.

Can I visit Masca for free?

The village, yes — drive or be driven in and walk the streets. The descent through the gorge to the sea is the paid part: booking is compulsory and the shuttles are capped.

Are the beaches free?

All of them. Sunbeds and parasols cost money at the resort beaches; the sand and the water do not. The natural pools on the north coast are free and unguarded.

Is there free parking at the sights?

Yes at the national park stops, the miradores and most of the villages — unticketed, and full by mid-morning in high season. Paid car parks exist in the town centres.

If everything is free, why book a tour?

For the driving, the pickup and the context. The roads to Masca and through Anaga are demanding, the parking is competitive, and nothing up there is signposted with the geology. If none of that matters to you, hire a car.
