Best time for Tenerife sightseeing
No dead month. Four things move — rain, the cloud sheet, snow on the summit and Saharan dust. Read the year, then book what that condition rewards.
Whales are resident, so the channel has no season at all — that is why no month here is empty.
Any month. May and September if you want one.
The south coast takes 132 mm of rain a year across 15,2 days, the whales never leave, and the caldera is open every month. What changes is which of four conditions is running: rain on the north slope, the cloud sheet between 800 and 1 500 m, snow on the summit from December to March, and Saharan dust on 146 days a year with a February–March peak. None of them closes the island; each of them makes a different booking the right one.
The year as a grid
Levels are relative and derived from AEMET 1981–2010 annual norms and the documented calima pattern. The annual figures quoted on this page are exact; the monthly shading is a ranking, not a measurement.
What that month rewards
calima
Saharan dust reaches Tenerife on 146 days a year — low and hot in winter with a peak in February and March, high-altitude in summer. It does not rain, it does not blow you off a boat, and it does not close anything. It simply erases the view: a hundred kilometres of visibility becomes twenty, and the caldera photographs grey.

Before you pick a month
About timing
When is the best month for Tenerife sightseeing?
There is no bad month, which is the honest answer: whales are resident, the caldera is open all year and the south coast takes 132 mm of rain across 15,2 days a year. If you want one month, take May or September — the cloud sheet is well formed for sunsets, the summit is clear, and the calima peak in February and March has passed or not yet arrived.
Is the calima season worth avoiding?
Not worth avoiding, worth planning around. Saharan dust reaches the island 146 days a year, low and hot in winter with a February–March peak. It cuts a hundred kilometres of visibility to twenty. Keep one flexible day: if the neighbouring island has vanished from your balcony, swap the viewpoint day for the whale boat.
When does Teide have snow?
December to March. The weather station at 2 369 m records 10,2 days with snow a year. When it falls the road up closes before anything else does, so the photograph people want is usually taken the day after, not the day of.
Is winter too wet in the north?
The north at 632 m gets 520 mm of rain across 64 days a year and spends 77,7 days inside cloud, most of it in winter. That is what makes it green. Tours still run; you simply trade the long view for laurel forest, and the south stays dry on the same day.
Are whales there all year?
Yes. Short-finned pilot whales are resident in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera — the first Whale Heritage Site in Europe. Boats are held 60 m off by law. Sailings run every month from Los Cristianos, twenty minutes offshore.
When is the best light for photos?
Late afternoon above the cloud sheet, any month. The sun sets into the top of the cloud rather than into the sea, and the caldera walls take the last of it. The €40 sunset and stargazing tour is built around exactly that hour.
